Gillingham head to boss Gareth Ainsworth’s former club Shrewsbury Town this weekend looking to keep building on the recent unbeaten run of games with striker Sam Vokes not looking at the league table just yet.

Speaking to KSN at this week’s briefing, striker Sam Vokes told us, “Morale in good in the camp despite the draws. But that’s one thing that has been evident since I joined the Club – they are a good group of lads and staff as well.
“We’re a few unbeaten but there is frustration after the two home games where we would have expected ourselves to pick up more points, but that’s the only positive really as we are frustrated as we expect more from ourselves as a group and a team. We are unbeaten, but we can do better!”
“It does show though that we are hard to beat, but that’s us. I have never questioned that as we are a solid group. We have come out of a run of not winning games for a while – I think that we have come out of that now and fully believe in this group that we can go on another run as we did before.
“We have had a few meetings this week and reviewing and looking ahead and the group is really ready to go!” As Ainsworth and Richard Dobson return to their former club, Vokes admitted that the subject had cropped up in those meetings.
“There’s always that underlying thing when you go back to your old club,” the Welshman told us.
“For us as players, it’s just background noise! That’s for them to deal with, we’re not looking at that at all – we’re just going to get the job done as we always do.”
The Gills travel to the borders seventh in the table but just four points off top, but Vokes told us, “I’m not really one for looking at tables, especially at this time of year. It’s a really tight division and we are well aware of that – we have seen all season that anyone can beat anyone.
“I think what is important though, and what has been showed before, is putting the runs together and you will be able to climb the table, so for us it’s all about building on that.
“When I first came to the club, we were on the back of that great run that we had, and we want to go back on that as I do think that it is all about consistency at this level. And for us to be consistent we have to go and pick up points on the road so hopefully we can get some on Saturday.”
“It was a great feeling around the place when we were on that long unbeaten run and that’s huge! I came in half way through the run, and you could feel it in the group, and this season started off as I believe last season ended, so that’s where we see ourselves really – on those sort of runs, putting that consistency together and now that the Gaffer is fully back in the building.
“It’s great to have him back in the building – it’s good to have him back every day and hopefully he will be part of putting another one of those runs together, as I think that’s what you need to climb this division.”
