With Gillingham adding to their striking options this week, the focus will be on the front men going into Saturday’s meeting with top of the table Bromley at MEMS Priestfield, something that striker Sam Vokes has seen before.

The Welsh international striker who netted the third goal in the win at Harrogate Town last weekend spoke to KSN this week. “The new boys (Cameron Antwi and Ronan Hale) have been great.

“The first time that we really got together as a team was on the training pitch on Thursday after the postponement – they were there looking really sharp and I know the strength that we have there already, and the two players, knowing what they have done in their careers before now, will only add to that!”

“We’re really looking forward to the game and possibly more after the postponement of Cheltenham on Tuesday.”

“The lads are in a good place; I think after a couple of wins we seem to have turned a corner and that confidence seems back in the group, so no better place than to bring the League leaders back to our place in our next game at home at Priestfield – really looking forward to it!”

“Tuesday was frustrating, we had done all the preparations for it and did everything right but that’s football and we understand that; we now have to go there on another Tuesday night at some point and go and get a result. We are on a good run and wanted to get another result so hopefully we can take that into Saturday.”

“The wins have been huge as I feel that we were not far from it when we were only picking up points here and there. There was a period in there really frustrating as we felt as though we were performing well but not quite getting the results that the performances deserved and so for ourselves and the fabs and everyone around the Club, to get those six points was huge really and gives us the lift going into the second part of the season.”

Ahead of another big Priestfield crowd expected at the weekend, Vokes said, “I know what the fans bring to this Football Club. I have seen it first-hand since the start of this season; it’s a local derby; they are League leaders so it’s down to us to take it to them – we know where we want to be by the end of the season and we are halfway towards that job. So, these are the days that we need to step up as a team and as a Club and get the result that we need!”

Reflecting on his goal at Harrogate last weekend, Vokes said grinning, “Let’s say that I “predicted” G Mc’s (Garath McCleary) scuffing it into my path and managed to swing a left foot at it and it went into the net – straight off the training ground,” he said laughing!

Vokes scored his first every professional goal at Priestfield in 2006 for AFC Bournemouth as a seventeen year old, and subsequently netted on a visit with Wycombe Wanderers ironically under the stewardship of current Gills boss Gareth Ainsworth, but it was pointed out that both of the strikers goals in Gillingham blue have come away from home base, something that made Vokes smile as he told us, “I would love to tick a goal off here for the Club, and to get one for our supporters will be great and to do that Saturday? Why not…”
