Former Holmesdale and Gillingham Ladies manager Ian Varley has today be unveiled as the new manager of SCEFL Premier side Rochester United.
Varley leaves Holmesdale 13th in the SCEFL First Division and takes over a Rochester side bottom of the Premier without a win in eight games in all competitions.
Ian is under no illusions of the challenge that he is taking on with Rochester United but he is looking forward to getting started in the new role.
Speaking to Kent Sports News, he said: “Very much so, it’s a completely different challenge as they’re in the SCEFL premier but it’s something I’m looking forward too.
“It certainly won’t be easy but as I’ve said before it’s a different challenge and something I wanted to have a go at. We have two weeks now until our next fixture so we’ve got plenty of time to sort a few things out ready for the next game. I’ll meet the players for the first time on Wednesday and we’ll get straight down to work.”
Ian doesn’t have a magic wand that he can wave at the situation that the club are in to get them out of trouble and winning games, but he does have a plan.
He added: “Just by working hard and making things simple for the players to understand, we need to get some points on the board quickly though so that’s what we’ll be aiming to do.”
Before taking up the reigns at the Rochester United Sports Ground, Varley was at Holmesdale FC for just over a season and it is a period that he looks back on with great fondness.
He said: “I thoroughly enjoyed it as it’s a great club with great people involved in it and I’m very thankful that they gave me my first job as a manager. Although I was only there just over a season I’ve certainly learnt a lot and I’m sure that will stand me in good stead for the future.
“Of course as I would have liked to of gone away from the club with a win but it wasn’t to be. They’ve got a competitive squad there so hopefully the new manager can go in and take them on further.
