One of the reasons why Gillingham are currently top of League Two this season are the five clean sheets that the Club has kept in their eight games played, and the custodian of the goal – Jake Turner.

Turner has been talking to KSN about the start of the season with the news emerging this afternoon that the shot stopper has put pen to paper on a new deal at Priestfield.

After keeping five consecutive clean sheets – the first in the final game of last season – Turner and his defence have proved difficult to get past.

Whilst the Gills haven’t scored lots at the other end, the underlying fact is that they haven’t had to, such has been the tightness of Turner and his colleagues.

It’s clear that the “Goalkeepers Union” at Priestfield is alive and well as Turner paid tribute to Glenn Morris and coach Deren Ibrahim, “they’ve been great! We work together every day – it really is so different from being an outfield player.”

“I think the best way I can sum it up by saying that we are individuals in a team sport, so it’s good that we get on, as if we do not, they will be a problem. But here it’s great as we support each other whoever is playing.”

“They’ve both got great experience and even last year when I was on the bench and watching Glenn play, I picked up so much from him, and this year, even the games that I’ve played, we’ve spoken after every game with me asking how I’d got on and how I’ve played and he’s been honest with me – the little things like that have helped so much!”

“I was a little bit surprised that the Gaffer made me first choice at the start of the season – I had worked hard during the summer. I had spoken to Dez and he said that it was fifty fifty between the two of us – made me feel that it was the best chance that I had had. I trained hard when we came back and thankfully, I got the shirt.”

“We took every game at a time despite breaking records as the goal was always to keep clean sheets and win games.”

Turner’s sister Millie plays for in the Women’s Super League and has been a good support for her brother.

“She’s tried to come to a few games – she was at Stockport. Her season has not started yet – think she has got another week or two off. She’s said we are doing well but she knows the score – it is still early doors.”

And for the record, Ms Turner plays for Manchester United!
