Tonbridge Angels 1-0 Cheshunt
Tonbridge Angels 1-0 Cheshunt

Tonbridge Angels with this victory amassed the most points in a season at this level and it was a carnival atmosphere as they celebrated also with a season’s best attendance.

It looks like a club on the up and the players enjoyed a day of freedom as they had no pressure on them apart from gaffer Jay Saunders wanting victory to end the season on a high and with Sonny Miles playing his last match at Longmead.

Cheshunt came here already relegated and to be honest, it showed as they rarely caused any problems to Tonbridge.

The game started with Tonbridge on the front foot as in the 8th minute Jack Wood picked up a loose ball and ran into the area before shooting but it was blocked for a corner, the corner into the area caused a bit of confusion and eventually fell at Ben Swift’s feet and his shot from 6 yards was parried away by Adam Desbois.

Cheshunt had their first half chance in the 11th minute when Isacc Pitblado saw his 25 yard shot go just past the post a minute later Guiseppe Re tried his luck from 20 yards but again it went wide.

Tonbridge could have taken the lead in the 21st minute when Joe Turner on the left saw his low cross to Jordan Greenidge but was cleared but only to Craig Braham-Barrett but from 15 yards his first time shot went over the bar.

A minute later Greenidge passed out wide to Wood who ran into the area but instead of shooting his curling cross to the back post found Turner who sliding in saw his shot came back of the post.

Tonbridge were in total control but did not have a goal to show while Cheshunt did not do anything to worry Tonbridge.

In the 33rd minute they should have taken the lead when Scott Wagstaff picked up a loose ball and his cross into the 6 yard box found Greenidge but with goal at his mercy he kneed it over the bar.

In the first minute of added on time Tonbridge took the lead when Wood put Greenidge in and he outmuscled the defenders and from 5 yards shot home a lead that Tonbridge deserved.

The second half saw Cheshunt up their game without causing any problems while Tonbridge carried on where they left off as in the 47th minute Turner on the left wing went into the area and his cross shot went across the area avoiding everyone.

Three minutes later Wood received the ball and ran into the area but had his shot saved. Another chance came in the 53rd minute when Turner’s cross into area found wood under pressure his shot went just over bar.

The game was still in Tonbridge’s control and in the 70th minute Wood tried his luck from 20 yards but it went just past the post, another chance went a begging in the 75th minute when a corner to the near post was met by James Fielding but it went wide.

The final whistle went and the Tonbridge faithful were happy but if they had been more clinical they would have won by more.
