The mystery continues with keepers
The mystery continues with keepers

The goalkeeping situation at The Valley continues to be a mystery.

Norwich loanee, Declan Rudd, was the incumbent number one in the recently finished season. It was thought Rudd’s contract at Norwich expired this summer, and that he could make‎ a permanent switch to the Addicks.

However, he had a year’s option in the deal which Norwich have activated, though‎ he could go out on loan again. Preston are leading the race for his signature.

Dillon Phillips was a more than able deputy when Rudd was unavailable, and impressed during an eight match run in the team.

Now 21-years-old, it is believed that Phillips wants to be first choice. If Karl Robinson does not see him as his regular custodian, Phillips may look to move on.

Third choice keeper, Dimitar Mitov, has been released and penned a two-year deal with League Two side, Cambridge, on Monday.

‎Mitov is 20-years-old and a Bulgarian Under-21 international, and will be remembered for scoring a goal from inside his six yard box at Coventry in an academy game.

He was on the bench as back up for Nick Pope in the early part of the 2015/16 season when Stephen Henderson was injured. He also had a number of bench appearances this season, as both Rudd and Phillips were absent‎ with injuries on occasions.

Mitov is an excellent shot stopper, and had a fine game against Hull in the Under-23 play-off game at The Valley recently.

But he can be inconsistent‎, and there have been rumours that he has an attitude problem. He will be first choice at Cambridge, and has the ability to develop into a decent keeper at league level.

Former Chelsea trainee, Jordan Beeney, is the next in line, and he has also been on the bench for the first team.

Robinson mentioned at the end of the season that he could be looking for two keepers. He needs to replace Rudd, and possibly Phillips too.

His keeper at MK Dons, 31-year-old David Martin, has been strongly linked with a move to The Valley.

Martin is an experienced keeper, who has also been on Liverpool’s books, and he will not be short of offers.

Charlton remain favourites to sign him, but it is not a foregone conclusion that he will pitch up in SE7.
