Another difficult afternoon for Welling United ended with them sharing the points with Bath City. Peter Taylor spoke afterwards before departing from the club.

He said: “It was a tough battle. Both teams are too close to the bottom of the table so it was an important match. I think Bath City are a really, really good team to be honest. They’ve conceded some goals lately but they’ve played against some of the top opposition so they’re certainly not an easy opposition.”

After nearly half an hour had been played, Bath went ahead and Taylor wasn’t pleased with the goal. He complained: “They scored a goal that was very disappointing for us. We think that Jack (Sims) should have dealt with it, he knows that, but I can only applaud the players for the way that they kept going in the second half because it’s not an easy pitch. You can’t really get the ball down with time. It’s not an excuse for us. We know where we are and we’ve got to get on with it.”

Ben Allen might have equalised immediately. Taylor said: “He missed the target and to be fair to him it wasn’t a particularly good day for Ben today but I did say to him at half time that I still fancied him to score and in the end he’s taken his goal well. I think that some of the players didn’t have a particularly good game but to be fair to them, I can’t fault the commitment. They kept going.”

At the back they were rarely worried despite Arthur Penney going off injured “Tom (Davis) did better.” Said Taylor. “He has recovered from the Slough performance. I thought he showed a very good attitude.”

“Brad Pearce has come back into the team and has done alright. In open play, we haven’t conceded too many goals. Again, today, it was another wide free kick, another set piece.”

As well as Allen missing a great chance, Dipo Akinyemi was also presented with a great opportunity that he was unable to convert “I thought that was the easiest chance, to be fair, and with the form he’s on, you can’t ask for anything more. He is extremely disappointed that he missed the target.”

Bath missed a wonderful opening of their own just before Welling’s equaliser and taylor moaned: “That’s where we haven’t been good enough all year. We haven’t been strong enough to stop having chances created against us and three months ago, that would have probably been a two-one defeat.”

“Overall, on the performance of the game, I think it was a fair result. We kept going. I don’t think we had a great deal of luck. I think their goal, the referee made a mistake on a decision. He allowed advantage because one of our players was fouled but then you don’t get an advantage from that decision so you should call it back.”
