Taylor disappointed with Welling loss
Taylor disappointed with Welling loss

It was another disappointing afternoon for Welling United as they threw away a lead to lose at Slough Town leaving manager Peter Taylor disappointed.

Peter Taylor, Welling’s manager, spoke after the game saying: “Again we started well. I couldn’t really see the penalty situation but the referee was there. He gave the penalty so I’m not going to argue with that but Dipo (Akinyemi) took it superbly, yet again, so we were in a good position.”

As has happened too often this season, Welling conceded almost immediately after scoring and Taylor groaned “Even from the kick off, again, they’ve had a chance which was disappointing because we’ve had this problem before when we scored a goal against Hungerford and then I didn’t think we defended well enough.

“You could say that it (the equaliser) was a good shot with his left foot but for me we should have shown him away from the goal and not given him the chance to shoot. It was very, very disappointing for me, to go down two-one at half time because I thought that we had done enough to be leading.”

In the lead up to both Slough goals, defenders lost their footing. Taylor said “If you go and slip close to your own goal it’s a risky area so that didn’t help and then the player will say ‘I didn’t mean to slip’ so there’s not too much I can say about that.”

Storm Eunice was partially the reason that the game was not a great spectacle. “It wasn’t easy and it was a very zippy pitch as well.” Said Taylor. “People were closing down each other so they didn’t have a great deal of time on the ball and nor did we, but the minute that we got it down and tried to play a little bit of two touch we looked better, but the last thing again, when we were in the final third of the pitch, was disappointing. We got into good areas and the final pass wasn’t right.”

Any suggestions that Welling are not getting the ‘rub of the green’ at present were refuted by Taylor. “We’ve definitely got to earn it (luck). The players are working hard but I’m not so sure that they’re working hard with enough belief. We need something to go for us to get a bit of confidence back into the players. All we can do is keep working on it.”

Victory for Braintree Town meant that only Billericay Town are now below Welling and it’s a concern for Taylor. He said “We’ve only got thirteen more matches to go now and we’re in a sticky situation so I need some leaders that want to do well for us and are going to fight like mad and get us a result. We’ve got a tough thirteen matches to go and a manager wants some characters.”
