Taunton Town vs Welling United – Preview

Still yet to win their first point of the season, Welling United are on their travels on Saturday with the long trip to Taunton Town.

Since being well beaten at Truro City on the opening day of the season, Welling have had two home games and could, or should, have had something out of each of them. Against Hemel Hempstead Town, the game appeared to be drifting towards a goal-less draw before they were victims of a poor penalty award which was converted.

Then they hosted Chelmsford City and looked to have claimed a well deserved point only to be thwarted by a goal in the ninth minute of stoppage time.

Meanwhile, Taunton have started with a win, a draw and a defeat. They started by beating Braintree Town at home before two games on the road. A trip to Aveley ended in a four-one defeat before they took a point away from Weymouth in a one all draw on Tuesday evening.

Mitch Dickenson and Crossley Lema are unlikely to return from injury, and TJ Bramble will be absent as he starts a three game ban. However, Welling manager Danny Bloor is hopeful that Lewis White will be back in contention for a starting place.

Last season, Welling travelled to Taunton on the opening game of the season and the two teams played out a goal less draw on a hot August Saturday.

When the two teams met in the return fixture at Park View Road in March, the Peacocks plundered the points courtesy of a single goal eight minutes from time. The visitors were awarded a penalty and although Myles Roberts saved Zack Smith’s spot kick, it came back out to him and he made no mistake second time round.

When looking for clues on what might happen this time around, little can be taken from those games as Welling’s management team has changed with a complete squad overhaul playing different tactics. Only Cameron Andrews, Amadou Kassarate, Taofiq Olomowewe and Antony Papadopoulos played in one or the other of those games and is still at, or has returned to the club.
