Tale of two races for Byrne
Tale of two races for Byrne

It was a tale of two races for Kent’s ‘Shakey‘ Shane Byrne on a sunny Bank Holiday Monday afternoon at Oulton Park.Shane Byrne17

In race one Shakey found himself crashing out, yet in race two he was back on the top step of the podium after securing victory in a thrilling race.

As ever when Byrne is on the front row be it pole position or not he seems to lead the race into the first corner. He did in race one and again in race two, as this time the squabble for second raged on behind him.

Josh Brookes was scrapping with Alex Lowes, it was Lowes that would maintain second place and bide his time, eventually making a move on Byrne on lap seven. However, Shakey wasn’t having any of it and was back ahead at Cascades, the lead changed hands again that lap.

Then on lap nine Byrne saw his opportunity and made a move stick on Lowes at Cascades for the second time in the race. Lowes was then fighting off Brookes who was tucked in behind the squabbling front two.

Lowes then ended up duelling with Brookes and Ellison as they all traded places. Ellison then tried to chase down Byrne and on the penultimate lap looked to be making a move on the defending Champion.

However a slight mistake lost him ground as he attempted to overtake Byrne, it meant that Byrne could cruise home and bring his Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki over the line for his fourth win of the season.

Speaking after the race a relieved Shakey, said: “Winning was a bit of a way of saying sorry to the team for the first race. I went down, lost the front and that was a strange one that the front should tuck in. One minute I was looking at Lowes’ swing arms, then next I though blimey, I am looking at some daisies.

“We turned it around in the second race and we pulled it off with the win. It was not easy as we had a lost out a bit on race settings because of the crash in the first race, but the team did a fine job to get another win.”

Race one saw Byrne lead into the first corner but the pace of Lowes meant that most people could not live with him and he rocketed off into the lead.

It wasn’t the best race for Byrne either as he managed to slide out on lap twelve of the race and had to watch from the side as Lowes went on to claim the win with Brookes in second.

At the end of the weekend Byrne lost his lead in the championship standings and trails Lowes by one point going into Knockhill in the middle of June.
