Deal’s Karen Stupples shot a five-under-par 67 to sit within two shots of the lead after the first round of the LPGA Founders Cup in Phoenix.

Stupples carded six birdies against one bogey to sit two behind leaders Park Hee-young of South Korea and Chinese Taipei’s Yani Tseng, whose round was highlighted by an eagle at the par-five 15th.

Another South Korean, Jiyai Shin, sat third on six under, one stroke ahead of compatriots Seo Hee-kyung and Choi Na-yeon, Sweden’s Pernilla Lindberg and Stupples.

Defending champion Karrie Webb, of Australia, was also well placed on four under.

Scotland’s Janice Moodie was in a share of 21st on three under, one stroke ahead of Laura Davies and Jodi Ewart, of England.
