Two first half goals proved to be sufficient for Cray Wanderers to beat struggling Welling United in Rod Stringer’s last game as the Wings’ interim manager.

After the game he commented “Some honest performances, people are trying out there but, same again, you give away two poor goals and when we get opportunities to try and create chances we’re not good enough at the other end of the park.
“The bottom line is it boils down to both boxes. We’ve been poor keeping the ball out of the net and when we get to the other end we don’t have that killer instinct.
“You can’t keep starting games and giving away soft, soft goals. Disappointed with one or two performances in the first half. We made changes at half time and probably looked stronger second half but the truth is, it’s all about both boxes. Whilst we’re making mistakes, it could have been three-nil with a pen, whenever we do look like we’re going to open them up and get chances, we’re just not good enough.”
Stringer will hand over the reins to a new manager and expects further playing personnel changes. He said “Whoever comes in, they’re going to have to bring some fire-power in and they’re going to have to bring in some defenders that want to defend.
“It’s not the send off that I wanted to give the club. When I came in late on that Friday night the day before we had Royston, I was here to do a favour, and it was never that I was going to be staying here. There’s fantastic people around the club starting with Howard and Lisa, who care a lot for the club, Then you’ve got the board. You’ve got Paul (Barnes) who’s come in now and is trying to bring in other implements to the game. Today you had fourteen hundred that’s probably gone down to the work that he’s done. You’ve got some really good people on the board and you’ve got some fantastic supporters.
“The new manager is coming in and he will re-assess and if he is doing his homework, he’ll be looking at a lot of the videos.” Stringer continued. “We just came in to tried and help the club at a time when things looked really bad. You’ve got to stick with what comes in. Hopefully, you’ll find a solution to start winning games. All I’ve done since I came in is to try and bring the budget down, working on very tight constraints, it was a case of trying to get us through.
“I think we’ve probably played nine or ten games including cup games, so we’ve had quite a long stint and we’ll have to put up our hands and say that we should have probably got more results than what we’ve got and whoever comes in has now got to try and turn the fortunes into winning games and, hopefully, try and get this club out of the relegation battle that we’re in yet again.”
He finished by saying “All I can do is thank all the supporters and everybody. I’ve come in for the right reasons and I’ve come in to do my utmost and try and get better results.”
