New signing, Cameron Stewart, has been challenged by Chris Powell to earn himself a permanent deal at The Valley.Cameron Stewart

Stewart appears to have no future at Hull but at his best, he is a potent threat at Championship level. The South London Press quoted Powell as saying this, at his weekly press conference last Thursday:

“Cameron suffered last year because Hull had a bit of money to spend and Steve Bruce brought in a number of players – Robbie Brady and Ahmed Elmohamady – who played wide.

“Cameron is someone who came to my attention way back. I always thought he was a good player and he had a superb season at Hull when he first went there.

“I remember Nigel Pearson bidding £1million to try and get him to Leicester when he first went back there.

“He is a quick, direct winger. We’ll need to bring him up to speed because he had a minor injury through pre-season.

“He’ll give me options. I can play with two genuine wide men but also use him in the number 10 role off of a striker.

“He has come in short term but I’ll be keeping my eye on him as someone that could be here longer.

“Most players are going away this weekend but Cameron is staying in London and wants to do extra sessions.

“That shows his attitude, he wants to shine and hopefully we can give him a platform to do that.

“I’m hoping we get the Cameron Stewart that was schooled at Manchester United. I feel he’ll be a good addition for us. He is a young player that wants to work, that is what I like in any player.”

Monday’s sacking of Carlisle boss, Greg Abbott, saw Powell rise to twelfth in the managerial longevity table.

There are rumours circulating that Addicks target, Jonathan Obika, is poised to join Championship rivals, Brighton, on loan. Obika impressed when on loan at The Valley at the end of last season and Powell is keen to secure his services again.

Charlton begin the defence of the Kent Senior Cup at Folkestone Invicta on Monday evening. The Addicks field their Under-21 squad in this tournament and it is unlikely that either of their new signings, Ben Alnwick or Cameron Stewart, will be involved .
