St Albans City vs Welling United preview

Two consecutive victories have taken Welling United out of immediate relegation danger and they will now be looking to build on the momentum and move further up the league table.

FOOTBALL (WELLING HOME)

Bradley Quinton has started a rebuild of the Welling side and the early signs are very promising. Two weeks ago they showed their character when claiming a late winner at home to Hungerford Town after the Crusaders had levelled with 15 minutes remaining.

Then last Saturday, Welling claimed their first ever victory at Hemel Hempstead Town despite playing fifty plus minutes with ten men. Dipo Akinyemi scored a scorching opening goal in the early stages and controlled the game until Bradley Rolt was dismissed before half time.

Although Hemel had a little more of the second half, Welling did not ‘park the bus’ and still had the better of the chances. They were rewarded with a second goal with 13 minutes remaining, slotted home by Korrey Henry.

Rolt’s dismissal means that he will not be available again before his loan spell expires however Quinton has suggested that if both Peterborough United, Rolt’s parent club, and the Welling board are in agreement, there may be an opportunity to re-new it once the suspension is spent.

On Saturday, Welling return to Hertfordshire when they visit St. Albans City. The Saints appeared to be climbing up the table in early December but since Boxing Day they have only won once in six games, a one-nil victory over Maidstone United.

However, they are not easy to beat on their own patch, their last defeat on home soil being in early November when Havant and Waterlooville claimed a three-one win.

It will be the third meeting between the two teams this season with a league game and an F.A. Trophy tie having already been played at Park View Road. In the league fixture, Albert Adu scored the only goal for the visitors four minutes before half time.

However, it was a different story in the Trophy game although at half time Welling supporters might have been fearful that lightning was going to strike twice as they were one-nil down to a Zane Banton goal.

Mark Goldberg, who was team manager at the time, made a double change at the break and substitutes Anthony Cook and Moses Emmanuel were instrumental in the turn around. Danny Waldren levelled a minute before the hour mark and less than sixty seconds later, Emmanuel put the Wings ahead. Although Waldren was then sent off, Cook made sure of victory with a goal six minutes from time.

Rob Swaine is still unlikely to be ready to return however Montel Agyemang is hopeful of being back in contention. He may have to bide his time before getting a starting place, though, as there is no current vacancy in midfield, so well are the current players doing.
