St Albans City 1-2 Welling United

Victory at St Albans City nudged Welling United further away from the relegation zone.

Dipo Akinyemi scored one in each half to put Welling in a strong position and although Joe Iaciofano pulled one back soon after Akinyemi’s second, the Wings defended well and held out in relative comfort.

Bradley Quinton’s team came out strongly and might have gone ahead in the first minute. Aaron Cosgrave got clear and rounded Dean Snedker but was unable to find a finish.

Iaciofano sliced wide for the hosts before Bradley Goldberg found Diaz Wright but he fired over. Goldberg was unable to control a long diagonal ball by Cameron James before Iaciofano missed a great chance for St Albans when curling beyond the far post.

Just shy of the half hour mark, Welling went ahead. Anthony Cook delivered a teasing corner that was half cleared as far as Akinyemi and the former Saint lashed it into the bottom corner.

David Noble lashed a free kick wide for the Saints but Welling finished the first half strongly and a long shot by Akinyemi drew a low save out of Snedker.

Scott Shulton curled wide for St Albans early in the second half before Goldberg’s low cross almost found Harold Joseph but he couldn’t quite reach it to touch home.

Soon after, Welling went further ahead. Akinyemi cut in from the wing and his twenty five yard shot took a deflection to give Snedker no chance.

Three minutes later, the hosts pulled one back when Iaciofano took advantage of some questionable defending with a close range finish.

Snedker made a great save from Korrey Henry and Goldberg had a shot deflected wide before the St. Albans custodian made a stunning double save. He got up off the ground to make a remarkable close range save from Goldberg and it flew up to Akinyemi. He thought that he had completed his hat-trick but Snedker was up again to make a stunning save.

Although St Albans threw men forward, Welling defended well and only a shot by substitute Jefferson Louis tested Dan Wilks but he was down well to smother.

The three points took Welling above St Albans and into sixteenth place, six points clear of the relegation zone.
