The Addicks fielded a largely reserve line-up at Southend on Tuesday evening and lost 2-1.

The inference is that the tougher test at Bolton on Friday, will be contested by the team Guy Luzon has in mind for the Queens Park Rangers game.

Of those that started at Roots Hall, Johnnie Jackson, Ahmed Kashi and Karlan Ahearne-Grant, will be hoping to force their way into Luzon’s  plans, for at least a bench spot for the season’s opener.

Loic Nego was again amongst the subs as was, surprisingly, Reza Goochannejhad.

The Shrimpers won 2-1, the second-half winner coming from former Valley bette noir, David Mooney.

Southend had a number of efforts from the edge of the box in the first-half that were blazed high, wide and anything but handsome.

But the Shrimpers’ persistence paid off in bizarre fashion on the half-hour mark. One time  Charlton target, Anthony  Wordsworth, hit a speculative shot from the edge of the box, which went through Nick Pope’s legs.

Two mnutes later, the Addicks were level Mikhail Kennedy exchanged passes with Karlan Ahearne-Grant on the right, and rifled in a fierce volley to even things up.

Mooney headed home the winner twelve minutes after the break. Following a fine save by Dimitar Mitov, Mooney was on hand to head home the rebound.

Charlton were the architects of their own downfall, surrendering possession cheaply with a casual ball out of defence.

Southend had started the half brightly, and enjoyed the better of things for much of the second period.

The Addicks rallied late on but had to wait until the 83rd minute before they won their first corner.

The decent sized Charlton following reserved their biggest cheer of the night for the 77th minute introduction of Reza Ghoochannejhad.

The little Iranian nearly broke clear but was foiled by the assistant referee’s flag.

Luzon’s men have the one warm-up game to go, Friday night’s clash with Bolton at the Macron.

It would be a surprise if any of those on view at Roots Hall start on Friday.
