Southall wants more consistency

Whilst happy with a vastly improved performance which saw his side come from behind to gain a valuable point in Tuesday’s draw at Sittingbourne, Whitstable Town’s player manager Nicky Southall was left questioning his sides inconsistencies.Nicky Southall2

“We’re obviously happy to come away with a point from what is a difficult place to come and I’ve got to say that I thought the boys were outstanding from first minute to the last.”

“But I’ve told the players that we can’t carry on being a Jeckyl and Hyde team – we’ve got to become a consistent one and play like we did tonight, and if we do that we’ll win more games than we’ll lose!”

“On chances alone it was ridiculous, and we said that the only way they were going to score was from a set piece and that’s exactly what happened right after half time.  And I was a bit frustrated with my keeper if I’m honest as I think he should have come and dealt with the corner they scored from.”

Southall recalled himself to the starting line up as his side reeled from a weekend hammering by Tooting and Mitcham.

He said “I gave the team selection some thought after the four nil defeat at the weekend and felt that they needed some leadership and experience on the pitch and so I played in my natural position – wide right tucked in – especially in the first half and put some decent balls through from which we should have scored at least once to be fair.  I brought myself off after an hour as I felt the thigh tightening so we sent the younger legs on.”

It is of course Southall’s first managerial role, and he admitted that it hadn’t been what he was used to.

“Its been different since I took over as you have to deal with completely different scenario’s where players aren’t available for whatever reason and your own work commitments – you cant train every day like I’ve been used to down the years and would like to and it is frustrating,” he admitted.

“But we’ve got a lot of games coming up, some good games too – Sittingbourne, then Corinthian and then playing in front of around 2,000 people at Maidstone next week.  We can be phased at any of those games as they’re good footballers and you saw that tonight where we were fit all night I thought.”

“But its the consistency that we just can’t find.  Let’s face it, the most consistent sides are the ones at the top of the League and positions don’t lie and that’s why we’re towards the bottom of the League.”

“Yes it is frustrating as it was one loss in five before we got beaten last weekend – but even if you analyse the game and take the goals away in the middle hour period, we should have been two goals up in the first fifteen minutes and then we could have had five in the last 15 minutes as their keeper was great. ”

“And again tonight we have so many chances in and around the box – it’s so frustrating that we just can’t put the ball in the net, but I am pleased that we kept looking like scoring all the way to the end, but we really do have to get a greater level of consistency and get rid of the Jeckyl and Hyde scenario.”
