Sittingbourne 5-0 Haywards Heath Town
Sittingbourne 5-0 Haywards Heath Town

175 days after they last won a home game, Sittingbourne finally broke their duck with a five star performance that blew Haywards Heath away.

Not since the opening day of last season had the Woodstock faithful seen such a dominant performance from their heroes, and not since the August Bank Holiday weekend had those same supporters been able to cheer a home win.

Yet they keep backing the Brickies every week home and away in good numbers and on this day, their heroes went some way for the rollercoaster of a season that the Club has experienced this season.

A fairly even opening half had no indications on what was to follow – the home side had the better chances but it was only in the half’s forty-third minute that the home side finally got their noses in front courtesy of a sublime finish on debut from Mitchell May after Donvieve Jones’ brilliant ball.

The second period really was one way traffic but could have been so different had Brickies keeper Harley Earle not made a sensational save to deny Byron Napper early in the half.

The home side took full advantage as Cheynie Burgin made it two after another great Jones ball into Aaron Eyoma who’s first touch was sublime.

The full back then netted twice himself (both created again by the influential Eyoma) before sub Vincent Follea netted the fifth sweeping home to cap a brilliant – and long awaited – home performance and more importantly three precious points.

The early stages were cagey and it took a while for the game to settle, but when it did the home side had the better chances – Burgin hit a post when he possibly should have done better and Joe Ellul’s header from a corner was really well kept out by Town keeper Billy Collings.

But just as the crowd started thinking of their half time refreshments, Jones found May down the left with a superb pass and the young striker then brilliantly opened his body to curl a shot beyond Collings and into the net to give the home side a deserved lead at the break.

It was a lead that the Brickies were indebted to keeper Earle just after the break as out of nothing Napper let fly from the edge of the box, and the young keeper made an outstanding save getting a big hand on the ball diverting it onto the upright.

The home side responded magnificently. Jones great run down the right found Eyoma whose delightful touch was buried into the bottom corner by Cheynie.

Soon after it was three-nil and this time Jones had his first Brickies goal (and his eighth of the season) since the reverse fixture in October. A long throw wasn’t dealt with and when Eyoma brought the ball down, Jones netted.

His second and the Brickies fourth arrived moments later. Burgin played a delightful ball for the onrushing full back who kept his cool and slid the ball wide of a hopelessly exposed Collings for four nil.

The five star performance was completed in the closing minutes as substitute Follea swept home a glorious fifth leaving Haywards Heath a well beaten side and facing a long trip home in the wrong sort of form at the business end of the season.

For the Brickies, the only way is up as the progress under Maxwell continues a pace with their sights now set on East Grinstead Town on Tuesday under the Woodstock lights.
