Shrewsbury Town 4-3 Charlton Athletic
A Ricky Holmes hat-trick was not enough for Charlton to take anything from Greenhous Meadow on Tuesday evening.

The Addicks lost a humdinger of a match 4-3. They have scored three goals in each of their last two away games but only one point to show for it.

Skipper, Johnnie Jackson, returned to the side at left-back, with Karl Robinson opting for a 4-4-2 formation, with Lee Novak partnering Josh Magennis up front.

In a see-saw match, Charlton twice came from behind and led at the interval.

Louis Dodds fired the Shrews ahead after 12 minutes. He shot across a static Declan Rudd and in to the far corner.

Just past the midway point of the half, a stunning long range effort from Holmes levelled things up for the visitors.

They took the lead a minute before the break with a trademark free-kick from the diminutive winger.

Robinson’s side had two opportunities to extend their lead in the early minutes of the second period.

Novak’s header from a Holmes corner was cleared off the line, and Jorge Teixeira went close with a header ‎from another Holmes cross.

Instead it was the hosts who scored. A quick breakaway gave Tyler Roberts the chance to level things up. His shot went across Rudd and into the far corner.

Two minutes later the Shrews were in front again. Another break presented Shaun Whalley with his opportunity.

Holmes completed his hat-trick twenty minutes from the end. He‎ latched onto a cross from the left and tucked the ball away via the near post.

Holmes created two chances for Novak, but it was Dodds who got the winner 15 minutes from the end.

It was an open, entertaining game but one that ultimately yielded nothing.

Robinson was critical of some of his players, questioning their desire, and has promised to make changes for Saturday’s trip to Northampton.

The winless run is now up to seven‎ matches, and Robinson may have to find a way to bolster his defence if he is to get that elusive win.
