Sevenoaks Town v Merstham preview

Football under the floodlights takes place at Greatness Park this evening when Sevenoaks Town host Merstham in the Isthmian League South East Division.

Currently in fifth spot, the Oaks are five places ahead of the visitors however, only one point separates the two teams. Sevenoaks have played five matches and Merstham six.

On Saturday, Sevenoaks hosted Sheppey United and won three-nil. James Stone opened the scoring in the fourteenth minute and Charlie Dickens added a second ten minutes later. Warren Mfula rounded off the scoring eight minutes after the restart.

Meanwhile, Merstham drew their third consecutive league game when they visited Erith Town. The visitors went ahead in the eighth minute through Paris Hamilton-Downes before Manny Oluwasemo equalised seventeen minutes later. Dexter Peter put the Dockers ahead midway through the second half, however, Matt Drage scored a stoppage time penalty to claim a share of the spoils.

Both of the matches between Sevenoaks and Merstham last season ended two apiece. On Boxing Day, the Oaks were the team hosting but went behind in the eleventh minute through a Billy Oram goal. Rodney Eruotor levelled just short of the half hour mark and Joshua Wisson put the hosts ahead with twenty minutes remaining. Aaron Jenkins restored parity in the latter stages.

Then, in the return match in April, the game followed a similar pattern. Korrey Henry put the Moatsiders ahead midway through the first half however, two goals in three second half minutes, scored by Mfula and Thomas Hanfrey, put the team from Kent ahead. Again they couldn’t hold on and Seanan McKillop scored a late equaliser.

Although still early in the season, both teams will be fighting for the three points. Should the Oaks win by more than two goals, they would go top. However, if the team from Surrey claims the three points, they will go third, one point behind league leaders AFC Croydon Athletic.
