Sevenoaks Town 2-1 VCD Athletic

Two players who have played Vanarama National League South football this season scored the goals that gave Sevenoaks Town a come from behind victory against VCD Athletic.

Rob Bartley gave the visitors a lead that they probably warranted at that stage but Sevenoaks responded by throwing men forward and levelled through Ryan Hayes with five minutes to go before Andy Pugh marked his debut with the winner in the final minute of injury time.

It was harsh on the Vickers to come away with nothing. They controlled the first half despite the swirling wind before much of the more even second period was played in heavy rain and hailstones.

Despite VCD coming out the strongest it was the hosts who had the first goal attempt but Tommy Whitnell fired across the face of goal after receiving Hayes’ through ball.

Ali Fuseini then came desperately close to putting the Vickers ahead with a twenty-five yard drive that Patrick Lee saved superbly by tipping on to the crossbar.

Great trickery by Alex Gaggin in the centre of the field allowed him to send Ainsley Everett away but he fired over. Then Lee was again in action coming out quickly as Charlie MacDonald chased a through ball.

Gaggin had the next chance when it fell to him inside the penalty area but he was unable to keep his shot down before the Vickers had one last chance in the first period. Fuseini sent MacDonald away and his ball across the six yard box begged for someone to finish but nobody was able to get on the end of it.

After the interval Temi Eweka fired over for Sevenoaks before Nick Blue made a comfortable save from Tyrell Richardson-Brown. Blue then had to come out quickly to clear when Hayes sent Richardson-Brown on the chase.

The lively Richardson-Brown continued to look dangerous and snatched one shot wide then had another blocked by Jack Steventon. James Bessey-Saldanha fired over from the corner of the penalty area before VCD had a chance when MacDonald brought Fuseini’s pass down on his chest but spun and shot wide.

Blue saved well from Whitnell after a Hayes free kick dropped into his path then VCD again attacked and Everett cut in and shot but Thomas Ripley made a good block at the expense of a corner. Bode Anidugbe delivered to the near post but Whitnell headed out for another corner. However, Aniduge’s second effort found Rob Bartley eight yards out and his powerful header gave Lee no chance.

Everett then missed a great chance to score the crucial second when he burst through but he opted to shoot first time rather than rounding the goalkeeper and he side-footed wide of the far post.

As the game went into the latter stages, Sevenoaks piled players forward as they searched for an equaliser. Richardson-Brown made a powerful run down the left wing before picking out Hayes but his header was cleared by Steventon.

Hayes was not to be thwarted for much longer although he might not have known too much about his leveller. His shot was well blocked but it bounced back to him, struck him on the shoulder and looped over the prone Blue.

Anidugbe put a dangerous cross into the area that caused chaos in the Sevenoaks defence but Lee somehow managed to turn it away for a corner and it looked as though the two teams were going to settle for a point apiece that would probably have been a fair result.

However, the two players on dual registration from Dartford had other ideas and with seconds of injury time remaining, Hayes crossed deep for Pugh to meet with a close range header for the winner.
