SE Dons v AFC Greenwich Borough preview
SE Dons v AFC Greenwich Borough preview

There’s a mouthwatering prospect in Chatham on Monday evening when SE Dons host AFC Greenwich Borough in the Southern Counties East Football League First Division.

Neither side played on Saturday. The Dons didn’t have a game scheduled, however, Greenwich were due to play at home to Lordswood but their pitch at Holmesdale fell foul of the recent heavy rainfall.

As a result, the situation remains the same at the top of the table with the hosts in pole position with fifty-five points from twenty-two games and their guests in second place, six points behind having played four games fewer.

Antonio Gonnella’s Dons have won their last five league games since drawing at home to SC Thamesmead before Christmas. Their most recent outing was two weeks ago when they won four-one at Banstead Athletic. Joe Thomas put them ahead on the half hour mark and Adrin Tajik doubled their lead before half time. Aaron Watson made it three-nil fifteen minutes after the restart but there was to be no clean sheet when they conceded late. They did add a fourth, though, when Kamieko Pope-Campbell scored in stoppage time.

Meanwhile Reece Parara’s Greenwich have won their last seven matches in all competitions, scoring thirty-four goals while conceding just one. Their last outing was last Saturday when winning two-nil at Lewisham Borough. Oghosa Williams put the visitors ahead in the tenth minute and doubled his tally midway through the second period.

In the first meeting between the two teams with Borough the hosts, the home team went ahead through a fourth minute Stefan Payne penalty. Parity was restored five minutes after the restart through an own goal and it appeared that the match was heading for a draw until two substitutes added late goals. Abdulahi Abdulazeez put Greenwich back in front with a minute of regulation time remaining and Williams scored a third in time added on.

Williams is the league’s leading scorer with twenty-one goals whilst Watson is third with thirteen for the Dons. If they both have their shooting boots on, it could be a high scoring tight encounter where something has to give.
