Charlton took a creditable point from table-topping Scunthorpe at Glanford Park on Tuesday evening; the game finished goalless.

Ricky Holmes aggravated the back his back injury against Wimbledon on Saturday, and did not travel to Glanford Park.

Also missing was Lee Novak, who fell victim to a bug on Monday.

Russell Slade opted for a five man midfield against the league leaders, restoring Kevin Foley and J‎ohnnie Jackson to the team.

Josh Magennis was the lone striker, with Nicky Ajose dropping to the bench. Slade made one other change, bringing Patrick Bauer in to partner Jason Pearce at the heart of the defence in place of Ezri Konsa.

The free scoring Iron had netted twelve times in their three previous home games, but nver seriously threatened Declan Rudd’s goal in this game.

The game in many ways was a microcosm of the Addicks’ season to date, they looked the better side, had the better chances, but failed to work the keeper.

Slade’s five man midfield stifled much of Scunthorpe’s creativity, but chances were at a premium for Charlton too.

Graham Alexander’s team had to wait until the 26th minute for their first corner, the Addicks had to wait until the 75th for theirs.

The best two chances fell Charlton’s way in the last five minutes. First, substitute Jordan Botaka blazed over from twelve yards‎, then in stoppage time, Johnnie Jackson struck the outside of the post from a free-kick.

Slade will be pleased with a point, but must be concerned with his side’s finishing. He had this to say after the game:

“I thought it was a really solid performance. We created a few openings, more than them, and played some really good football.‎”
