SC Thamesmead v AFC Greenwich Borough preview

Wednesday evening football returns to the Masher Brothers Community Stadium when holders SC Thamesmead host AFC Greenwich Borough in a Kent County Invitational Charity Cup semi-final.

Whilst both teams have completed their objectives that they had when they met in March, they will still be pleased to see out the season in a cup final (another in the case of Greenwich).

On that night two months ago, the hosts were in a precarious position just one point above the bottom three, while Greenwich were three points behind league leaders SE Dons with two games in hand, plus a far superior goal difference.

Despite the big gap in the table, the hosts enjoyed a fully deserved two-nil victory. Joseph Ikuesan put the hosts ahead in the fourteenth minute and Daniel Palfrey added the crucial second goal with sixteen minutes remaining.

Although that was a big blow to Borough, they held their nerves to win the title, accompanying their London Senior Trophy success. Meanwhile, the Acre finished in a very respectable tenth place, eleven points clear of the bottom three.

When the two teams met at the RTL Group Stadium, Holmesdale, at the start of September, Greenwich were forced to work hard for their three points. Jack Church put them ahead in the ninth minute, however, Abdou Jobe levelled from the spot a minute before half time. Sixteen minutes remained when Oghosa Williams scored what turned out to be the winner for the hosts.

To get this far, Thamesmead started with a three-nil victory over Bridon Ropes with goals by Wale Odedoyin, Henry Awokere, and Chris-Emmanuel Loko. Then they beat Guru Nanak four-two in the quarter finals.

Meanwhile Greenwich thumped Lewisham Borough with Frankie Woods, Nathan Godziemski (twice), Stefan Payne, and Italianas Komas on target. They were then awarded a walk-over when Rochester United withdrew.

Whoever wins will play the winners of FC Elmstead against SC Thamesmead Reserves in the final.
