Savill wins bronze at national event

Luke Savill had to settle for the bronze medal at the Junior National Cup tournament for the top 10 players in the junior national rankings.

The Maidstone teen was seeded second for the round-robin event, and performed well to win all five matches on the first day.

But he was defeated by third seed Matt Leete on day two, his opponent edging a high-quality match 4-2 (11-9, 12-10, 4-11, 11-5, 14-16, 12-10), and was then beaten by top seed and champion Tom Jarvis 4-0 (11-5, 11-6, 11-8, 11-8) in his final match.

“I played well on the first day but just struggled to keep it up,” said former Oakwood Park student Savill, 17. “It’s a lot of matches and it’s hard.

“Tom was too strong for me but I had one bad game apart from that. A medal’s not too bad.”
