Saunders departs Maidstone United

Manager Jay Saunders has left Maidstone United by mutual consent after a disappointing start to the new season.

He was first appointed by The Stones in March 2011 – initially on a caretaker basis – before being given the job permanently at the end of that season.

During his time with Maidstone United, he led the club to a tremendous three promotions in four seasons from Isthmian South to the National League.

He also took charge of the first game back in Maidstone when the Gallagher Stadium opened in July 2012.

However, after an indifferent start to the third season in the National League, the directors and Jay have agreed to part company. The club will now begin the process of recruiting a new manager.

Club chief executive Bill Williams said: “This is a day none of us wanted to come but collectively we’ve decided to go our separate ways.

“In 60 years of football, this is one of the toughest decisions I’ve been involved with. I count Jay as a friend and have the utmost respect for what he’s achieved here at the football club.

“Jay has become synonymous with Maidstone United over recent years and his place in our club’s history is assured. His influence went beyond the first team to the academy, player development centres and soccer schools.

“He will always have a special place at the club, we thank him for everything he’s done and wish him the very best in wherever his football journey takes him next.

“We hope that part of that might be with us as we would like to continue a relationship with him going forward.”

Assistant manager Steve Watt will be in caretaker charge for at least Saturday’s away match at Gateshead and next Tuesday’s home fixture against Sutton United.

Applicants with Football League or National League managerial experience are invited to apply by emailing a CV and covering letter to Bill Williams: [email protected].

For an informal chat about the role, Bill can be contacted on 01622 753817.

The closing date for applications is Wednesday 5 September at 17:00.
