Salford City vs Gillingham – Preview

Gillingham are back on the road this Saturday as they travel to Salford for another League Two clash.

Gillingham ended their winless streak on Easter Monday with a convincing 2-0 win at home to Accrington Stanley – their first win since 28th February.

Monday’s game was a combative fixture with two Accrington players dismissed, but not before the Gills put two goals past them. The first was in the first half, a thumping header from centre-back Andy Smith, while the second was a clinical, bending right-footed finish from Garath McCleary in the second half. They were Smith and McCleary’s first goals for the club.

The win means Gillingham move to 49 points, and mathematical safety, but they remain 17th in the table. Manager Gareth Ainsworth has stated that his target for this season is to beat last year’s total of 56 points – they have five remaining games to achieve this.

Salford have had a strong season overall, largely occupying one of the automatic promotion spots, but a period of six losses in eight games in the early part of 2026 pushed them down into 9th. However, six wins from the next eight games lifted them back up to 6th, six points clear of the chasing pack and three away from 3rd.

In their last fixture, Salford lost 1-0 away at Crewe Alexandra. The goal was a volley from Emre Tezgel, which broke through the keeper’s hands to open the scoring.

Gillingham and Salford have played each other on seven occasions, with Gillingham winning four and Salford one. In the reverse fixture in October, Salford took all three points in a 2-1 win at Priestfield. The visitors were 2-0 up after 27 minutes, with Glenn Morris subbed off injured in the opening minute. Josh Andrews pulled one back in the first half, but the Gills couldn’t find an equaliser.

The Gillingham squad will be similar to last week, but there are questions over the fitness of Armani Little, who went off with a finger injury and Conor Masterson played his first minutes as a substitute since his injury, so he may be in line for a recall to the starting 11.

This is a tough fixture for Gillingham; they have only pride to play for, while Salford are in the promotion hunt. But there is definitely a sense around the club that the team turned a corner over the Easter weekend. Not only did they secure four points against teams above them in the table, but they looked more solid defensively, created more chances, and scored twice from open play.

With vibes on the up at Priestfield, I predict they will put on a decent performance at Salford.
