Salford City 2-0 Bromley
Salford City 2-0 Bromley

Bromley travelled up to Greater Manchester for a Thursday night game against Salford City knowing that two wins in their final two games would seal the League Two championship for The Ravens in only their second ever EFL season.

While their hosts still harboured hopes of automatic promotion and at least securing a play off spot and it was The Ammies who picked up all three points with two well taken second half goals.

The match got off to an open start with both sides creating early chances, Longelo fired over for The Ammies before Bromley were awarded a free kick for a foul on Corey Whitely and Mitchell Pinnock’s dead ball came out to Nicke Kabamba whose fierce drive was well saved by Young.

From the resulting corner Omar Sowunmi headed just wide at the far post. The Ravens continued to threaten from set pieces, but the home side dealt with the pressure well and then had a good spell going into the half.

Garbutt’s low driven swerving free kick was saved by Grant Smith’s feet. In the end the two evenly matched teams went into the break tied at zero.

The second half started with the home side looking stronger and the referee happy to let the physical side of the game go. Salford took the lead on 52 minutes when Grant found space and time just outside the area and he unleashed an unstoppable drive that beat an unsighted Smith to make it 1-0.

Grant then put a dangerous ball across goal that Graydon just touched wide before Bromley rang the changes on the hour mark. The Ravens looked brighter for a spell from there, Pinnock found Ben Thompson whose turn and shot was well saved by Young.

Kabamba and Thompson then combined to set up Pinnock who hit the side netting from out wide, before Young went down with a tactical injury that gave Salford time to re-group.

The response was almost immediate for The Ammies, as they went 2-0 up on 76 minutes when a Grant corner was headed home by Turton in a crowded area going in off Smith.

Despite ten minutes of added on time Bromley didn’t really get going again and Karl Robinson’s side professionally managed the game to a conclusion, which moved them up into third place with one game left.

Bromley’s final game is at home to Walsall on 2nd May, which is already a sell out, and Andy Woodman knows they will have to win and hope that MK Dons slip up in their final two matches to have a chance of winning the title to go along with the incredible achievement of survival.
