With his season now complete Jack Sales looks back on the highs and lows of his debut season in the Caterham Tracksport series.Jack Sales - Jack Mitchell 1

Having made the decision to make the step-up from the Roadsport series at the start of the season, Jack has loved every minute of competing.

Speaking to Kent Sports News, he said: “Yes absolutely! This year in Tracksport, I was racing against mostly against people I raced in Roadsport, but with a couple of fast additions to the grid to spice things up!

“This year in Tracksport has certainly been up and down, although mostly down unfortunately, with all the bad luck we’ve had this year (getting taken out, getting caught up in other people’s incidents and having an engine blowing).

“I knew it was going to be competitive, but I don’t think anyone expected it to be quite as competitive as it was, with any one of ten people being in the running for the win going into any given race, which made things very exciting!”

Despite having issues throughout the season, Jack still found himself on the podium and more importantly the top step.Jack Sales - Jack Mitchell

He added: “Winning is a huge bonus. Having had a solid second and third at the first round at Snetterton and then having either retirements or poor results, to come back at Brands Hatch with a third and then a win was certainly a very sweet feeling, and a huge relief at the same time.”

Jack took the difficult decision to skip the final two rounds of the season and to focus on preparing for a massive challenge in 2016.

“Skipping the last two rounds was, taken in isolation, a difficult decision, but actually quite an easy one when I thought about why I was skipping them. Saving a few thousand pounds by not competing, in order to race in the Caterham Superlight R300-S championship next year certainly numbed the pain.

“In addition, there is a saying; ‘You are only as good as your last race’, which was, in this case, a win at Brands Hatch by over 6 seconds, so it is a nice memory to end the season on!

“Next season is going to be a huge challenge, competing in R300s. The car is much trickier to drive and to set up than any of the other Caterham classes, hence it is a class where the vast majority run with team support, but we will be running as privateers, just me and the parents.Jack Sales - Brands Hatch - Jack Mitchell

“It is going to be a bit strange though, where I am going to have to accept that I may not actually have the out and out pace to win any given race, certainty for the first few races whilst we learn the car. I have to say though, I’m relishing the challenge and the fresh start.”

Finally, we asked Jack to let us know what the highlight of his season, and it is no surprise with the answer.

He said: “Highlight of the season? Winning at Brands Hatch, by a good margin, in front of my family who came to watch, and after such a long time since my last win.”
