Rushen shines after great racing
Rushen shines after great racing

Fifteen-year-old Cooper Rushen swept all competition before him to emerge triumphant from the 500 cc class of Sunday’s British Youth Round at Iwade’s Old Gun Site, home of the Kent Eagles on Sunday afternoon.

The Leicester Lion Cubs and King’s Lynn Young Stars exponent who has emerged as potentially one of the sports hottest new talents this season romped to four straight wins in the qualifying stages and then hit the front again once more in the final heading Plymouth duo Ryan Ingram (also Rushen’s Leicester team mate) and Charlie Southwick (also Middlesborough) in the final four laps.

There was disappointment amongst the Kent Eagles contingent that home hero Jamie Etherington, and competition leader prior to the meeting was unable to take part, having suffered a broken arm and fractured vertebrae in the Iwade outfits visit to the Adrian Flux Arena in mid-week, a night of misfortune that saw them go down 53-35 to the Young Stars.

Casper Kluczniak claimed top spot in the 250cc class final but Seth Norman who had raced unbeaten to that stage could consider himself unfortunate not to emulate Rushen’s triumph. Norman suffered not one but two falls, the first due to first bend bunching offered a second bite of the cherry but the second came as he vied closely with Kluczniak proved decisive as he was ruled out of the second rerun. Norman clearly felt that the decision had gone against him, but the official was not for turning as Kluczniak went on to beat Ollie Binns and Emerson Betty to decide the class rostrum places.

Lewis Hague got the better of Fraser Buckle despite having been outscored by him in the qualifiers to win the 125cc class but arguably the afternoon’s biggest cheer was reserved for Kent Eagles mascot, eight-year-old Oscar Berwick who secured third place in the final but who had demonstrated some brave and exciting from the back swoops to delight the crowd throughout the afternoon.

Douglas Marshall was another maximum man, winning all four of his races in the Support class qualifying heats. He made it five out of five to take the title ahead of runner up Callum Hague, third place Ella Marshall and Seb Kelly.

Indeed, all riders, officials and the Kent Eagles Management themselves should all receive congratulations on the part that they each played in serving up an enjoyable and superbly run meeting, thirty-one races being completed in a little over two and a quarter hours in spite of rain threatening skies.
