Barnsley and Peterborough both played games they had in hand over Charlton on Tuesday night and enjoyed mixed results.Charlton Athletic

The Tykes made full use of home advantage to beat promotion chasing Brighton 2-1 at Oakwell. An early strike by Jason Scotland and a 64th minute penalty from Chris Dagnall were enough to secure the points. The win was enough to lift Barnsley out of the relegation zone and they still have one game in hand over most of their rivals at the foot of the table. The Tykes showed no hangover from Saturday’s 5-0 FA Cup thumping by Manchester City and the perennial relegation favourites look to be embarking on another great escape bid.

Peterborough led for a long time at Elland Road thanks to an early goal from prolific marksman, Dwight Gayle. Leeds levelled just before the hour mark and Posh had to withstand heavy pressure to cling on for a point. The 1-1 draw was not enough to lift them out of the bottom three.

Last night’s results saw Wolves slip back into the danger zone. Charlton are now eight points clear of the bottom three with nine games to go and have a vastly superior goal difference to most bof the teams in the bottom half of the table.

Saturday’s opponents, Millwall, are in danger of being dragged into the dog fight at the bottom unless they arrest their recent poor form. The Lions are five points above the drop zone and though they have two games in hand, their FA Cup run could cause an unwanted fixture pile up.
