Reeves looking for more goals

Ben Reeves had probably his best game in a Charlton shirt at Blackburn on Saturday. The one disappointing aspect of his performance was his finishing.

Reeves is a clinical finisher, but missed two decent chances on Saturday. First, he received ‎a square ball from Leon Best close in, but he shot straight at David Raya.

Raya parried another Reeves effort at the foot of his post early in the second half. Normally, Reeves would be expected to put those chances away.

Once again, the Addicks had enough chances to have won the game, yet they came away empty handed.

Here are Reeves’ thoughts:

‎”The most important thing is to get back to what we were doing well at the start of the season, get all of the basics right and the rest of it comes with that.
“We’ve got the quality in the dressing room and nobody wants to play us at our place, it’s a tough place to come. We’ve got great players and great backing from the fans as well.

“We just need to build on that, hopefully we can start that on Saturday and get another run going. If we can get on a run like Blackburn are on, we’ll go flying up the table again.

“We probably deserved something from the game, at least a draw. We had a long discussion in the changing room afterwards. The boys are disappointed, ” said the midfielder.

Reeves may be over estimating the value of The Valley to the team, they have only won six of their eleven home games this season, drawing three and losing two.

If The Valley was an impregnable fortress, Charlton would be closer to the leaders. But Reeves was still upbeat about the team’s promotion prospects:

‎”We’ve got to build on the performance. It’s hard to say when you don’t get the result you want or deserve, but we’ve got to build on the performance.

“I think we were better than them. We should look at that and think if we’re coming here and are probably the better side, we should be finishing higher than them in the league.

“We need to get ourselves on a run like they’ve got on, six wins in a row. We’re more than capable of that. Hopefully we can start that on Saturday.”

The Addicks have slipped to sixth place in the table, and are only in the play-off zone by virtue of having scored more goals than Portsmouth.

‎They have only won one of their last six league games, picking up five points from a possible eighteen.

With tough trips to Southend and Wigan coming up before the end of the year, it is essential that Karl Robinson’s side pick up three points against Blackpool at The Valley on Saturday.

Charlton are now sixth in the table, and are only ahead of Portsmouth by virtue of goals scored. Robinson will not want to see his team slip out of the play-off zone.
