Joe Pigott has joined Southend United on loan, initially the deal is for a month but it could well be extended.

Pigott has been on the periphery of the Charlton first team but has failed to make a real breakthrough.

The 21-year-old had a loan spell at Gillingham last season and had a further loan stint at Newport earlier in the season.

Pigott goes straight into Phil Brown’s squad and will be involved against Plymouth at Roots Hall on Saturday. Brown had this to say after completing the deal:

“We’re really pleased to have brought Joe to the club and he’s someone we do believe has a goal in him.

“He caught our eye when he played for Charlton against us in a behind closed doors friendly and that’s the beauty of the games.

“He’s a big lad and he did well with Newport earlier on in the season so this is a good deal for us.

“He with us for an initial month and then we will have a look at things again after that, but he will definitely be involved in the Plymouth game,” Brown told the Southend Evening Echo.

Meanwhile, Tony Watt is likely to feature from the bench for the Addicks against Brighton on Saturday.

Watt could get his first start in a Charlton shirt in Monday’s Under-21 game against Millwall.
