Despite a spirited display Petts Wood & Holmesdale’s FA Cup run came to an end as they lost out Step 4 opposition in Windsor & Eton at The New Inn Stadium in front of over 200 fans on Saturday afternoon.
With both teams having got through two rounds to be at this first qualifying round stage, they were both keen progress further and potentially face National League South opposition in the next round.
The game got going with Windsor doing the early pressing, Penton fired wide, Johnson-Schuster shot over and Pender-Brown had a shot tipped over by Reece in the home goal. Pender-Brown went close again soon after as The Royals pressed and they eventually took the lead when a corner came out to Phillips on the edge of the area and he curled a superb effort into the far corner for 0-1.
Holmesdale came back into things from there and they went close when they were awarded an indirect free kick for the keeper handling a back pass. Evans laid the ball off to Mahal who hit a fierce effort that was well saved by Purcell.
Late on Windsor almost doubled their lead when Phillips hit the post on the volley, but they had to settle for a one goal lead at the break.
The second half saw The Royals start well, Mazzone had a shot saved, before they went 0-2 up when Jordan crossed for Mazzone who set up Hutchings to crash the ball home from just inside the box.
Petts Wood & Holmesdale rallied from there and pulled goal back on the hour when Samuels hit a 25 yarder that gave Purcell no chance to breathe life back into the tie. Samuels headed over soon after as they pressed for an equaliser, but the visitors effectively killed off the game with the next goal two minutes later.
Phillips crossing for Hashi to convert with a side footed finish. Donville hit the side netting soon after as Windsor looked to extend their lead and they were gifted a fourth when a poor clearance came to Weston-Brown who made no mistake.
The fifth goal came on 85 minutes with Darcy having a shot saved by Hobbs, but Donville followed up to make it 1-5 from the rebound. Late in the match Clover and Wakefield were just off target for The Dalers, while Weston-Brown fired wide when well-placed for The Royals.
Petts Wood & Holmesdale now have another cup tie on Tuesday night when they play Sporting Bengal Utd at home in the London Senior Cup, while Windsor & Eton head into the second qualifying round.
