Peterborough United v Gillingham preview

It’s win or bust for Gillingham this evening as they head to Peterborough United knowing only a win will do to be in with a hope of a play-off place.

Realistically, their chances of making the top six are all but gone after the 3-2 loss at Oxford United at the weekend having held a two goal lead.

Manager Steve Evans was critical of his side for failing to see that game out and has publically stated that he believes the play-offs are now beyond The Gills, but they will undoubtedly want to end their League One campaign on a high.

The season has promised so much at times and Evans is hoping the team give him everything they’ve got for their remaining four league games, starting tonight at former side Peterborough United.

“We are not in the mix anymore, but we’ll go and try to represent the Football Club with some real pride on Tuesday when we take on, for me, a team that is absolutely outstanding. It will be very tough.”

“Our plan will be different to the Oxford game, Peterborough are a far superior team and present you deeper problems and from multiple areas.”

That suggests Evans could make changes from the side that started at Oxford with the likes of Dominic Samuel, Tom O’Connor and Rob McKenzie all pushing for a starting berth.

Evans has confirmed despite possibly being able to be fit for the final game of the season, midfielder Callum Slattery won’t feature again and his loan spell from Southampton will end without him playing another minute for The Gills.

Meanwhile, James Morton lasted just a few minutes in a Gillingham shirt, but his loan spell from Bristol City has ended as Evans believed he wasn’t ready for League One.

Whoever starts at Peterborough tonight, Gills fans will be hoping their side show some grit and determination for these remaining games and finish the campaing on a high and don’t let the season wimper to a close.

One eye clearly is on next season for many Gills fans. Who will be at the club come the summer though?
