Penultimate round of season for Lidsey
Penultimate round of season for Lidsey

Brett Lidsey’s outstanding Renault UK Clio Cup campaign continues apace this coming weekend, with the penultimate event of the 2019 season taking place at the home of British motorsport – Silverstone National Circuit.

Just a week ago at Knockhill in Scotland, MRM driver Lidsey made a welcome return to the podium and almost made it a double helping of silverware as he closed to within 13 points of the top three in the championship, where he is determined to end only his second year of racing at this level.

Despite having never visited Knockhill, taking his first laps of the challenging and unique 1.27-mile Fife track during official practice, the Northfleet racer performed tremendously well and produced terrific race pace to challenge at the front throughout the weekend.

While Silverstone’s National Circuit is another short track like Knockhill, the comparison between the two ends there. Where the Scottish venue has a variety of undulations, twists and turns around the narrow circuit, Silverstone is much wider and realistically has just four true corners.

In short, the 1.64-mile National Circuit promotes incredibly close Clio Cup racing and yet another stunning battle over the podium placings is guaranteed when the championship resumes just a few days from now.

“I really can’t wait to be back at Silverstone, it’s always fantastic to race there and the National Circuit offers some great opportunities to try and overtake and obviously some long straights where you can try and set things up”, said 28-year-old Lidsey.

“I was really pleased with how Knockhill turned out for us in the end, it was a tough weekend having lost my Nan on the Friday morning but it meant a huge amount I was able to get on the podium in race one and dedicate the result to her. Overall it’s been a fantastic season so far, I’m still pushing hard for the first win and I’m confident we should be on for another strong weekend at Silverstone.”

Back in August, of course, Lidsey did appear to have achieved his maiden race victory in the British Touring Car Championship support series when he took the chequered flag in round 11 of the season at Thruxton over a second clear of his rivals after a tremendous race from his first ever pole position.

The application of a 10 second penalty for a perceived false start, though, dropped him down the amended result so the Liftout, GHR Scaffolding Ltd, GPL Projects Ltd, Certus Security, Dornack, Taylor Made Decals, MS Motorsport and MSY Grab Hire & Mini Digger Hire sponsored driver is hungrier than ever to climb to the top step of the podium.

Fourth in the points table going into this coming weekend’s event at Silverstone, Lidsey has a total of eight podiums from 14 races contested with four second place results and a further quartet of third place finishes to his credit.
