Pennock linked with Gills job

Former Gillingham defender Ady Pennock is the current favourite to be named the next manager of the club.

The Kent club sacked former boss Justin Edinburgh on Tuesday morning after The Gills recorded just one win from their last five league matches. Gillingham currently find themselves in 17th place in the League One table.

Ipswich born former Gills centre back Pennock has been supporting close friend Jamie Day in his role as manager of Welling United. The 45 year old has not managed a club since being relieved of his duties at Forest Green Rovers last April despite guiding the club to second place in The National League table.

Pennock spent seven years as a player with Gillingham and the former defender became a popular figure at Priestfield Stadium after helping guide the club to promotion to the second tier during his time with The Gills.

With Pennock having only managed in non league football, appointing him as Gillingham boss would be a risk nevertheless it could prove a popular choice for the fans.

Meanwhile, Andy Hessenthaler could be returning to the club in the capacity of Director of Football, whilst Ian Hendon is being linked with a return to the club as one of Pennock’s coaches.
