Kent Crusaders opened their season with a 74-66 win over Ipswich in the Patrons Cup on Saturday afternoon at Brompton Academy, Kent.

Obi Agu had a strong start to the season on his way to 20 points, RJ Eytle-Rock added 12, including some big free throws down the stretch, Kevin Boatey 11, while new addition Sean Nealon-Lino added 9, showing his range from beyond the arc.

Despite Kent being in control the majority of the contest, Ipswich led a furious second half rally that saw them pull to within one on multiple occasions, before timely plays from Dan Akin and RJ Eytle-Rock provided a cushion.

“It’s always good to the start the season with a win, especially against quality opposition like Ipswich,” said Kent Head Coach Lloyd Gardner, who returns to head up the team for the first time since his playoff championship season in 2015.

“Obviously, we still have a lot to work on, and this game showed that, but it was a great measuring stick for us after our first week of practice. Ipswich fought hard and I am happy with how our guys responded under pressure.”

Luke Mascall-Wright led Ipswich with 24.

Kent will now face London Greenhouse Pioneers in October 1st (2:30pm tip at City Sport, London) to round out Pool 3 action in the Patrons Cup as they will aim to book a place in the semi-finals.
