Nichols leaves Gills for Mansfield

Gillingham striker Tom Nichols has completed a permanent transfer to Mansfield Town.

The 30-year old striker joined the Gills officially on New Year’s Day of 2023 and went on to score nine times in 55 appearances in all competitions.

His last goal came against Salford City in a 3-1 win at Priestfield in November last year.

He joins a Mansfield side who are currently third in the Sky Bet League Two table, six points shy of Stockport who are top. Nichols could make his debut at home to Notts County this Saturday.

Tom has previously played for Exeter, Peterborough, Bristol Rovers and Crawley Town.

On his latest signing, Mansfield Town manager Nigel Clough said: “Tom is a proven goalscorer and goal maker at this level and I’m sure our supporters will know him from doing well against us in the last few seasons.

“He is someone who we’ve been interested in for quite a while but never quite managed to secure until now.

“We think he’ll fit in very well with our style of play. He’s an intelligent player and can come off the strikers or play right up there.

“The most important part is that he wanted to come here, and we’re delighted to have him on board.”

Nichols follows Macauley Bonne out the door of Priestfield after signing for Cambridge United on loan until the end of the season earlier in the day.

Gillingham followed that up by bringing in Watford striker Jorge Hurtado on loan until the end of the season.

Speculation that The Gills are set to land Birmingham striker Josh Andrews and Jonson Clarke-Harris from Peterborough United are gathering pace with the transfer window to close at 11pm this evening.
