Nevitt hoping for better second half of the season
Nevitt hoping for better second half of the season

Striker Elliott Nevitt is looking forward to Gillingham’s home game with Doncaster Rovers on Saturday lunchtime perhaps more than most as he looks to atone for the horror ending of the side’s last home game against Bromley.

With the Gills three nil down, Nevitt missed from the penalty spot at the end of the game, to sum up a desperately disappointing night for the home side.

Since then, of course, John Coleman has come in to replace the departed Mark Bonner and after last Saturday’s game with Fleetwood Town was postponed, all attentions now turn to the weekend and Donnie’s visit to Kent.

Speaking to KSN this week, the striker admitted that the ninety minutes against Bromley in a way summed up the Gills season – silly mistakes and being punished; a period of good football with no positive results; then the penalty miss!

Nevitt admitted, “I think you’re right as it was a tough game for everyone. That game was a low point for the team being beaten three nil at home. We all felt like we could have and should have played better on that day.”

“We fell behind to sloppy goals, it’s team goals as it’s not down to individuals, goals we let in we do so as a team. Second half though we started buzzing and had chances but didn’t score and that really does sum up the first half of the season.”

“Saturday feels like a re-start for everyone as I think all the lads are ready now for the second half of the season – I feel that now we have to start pushing on for what we all want to achieve this season.”

“The mood is good after the change of the manager, the boys are raring to go with the new manager having to make some tough decisions come Saturday. The boys are training hard, it’s been really intense especially with having two weeks off.”

“You can already tell what the new manager’s demands will be of us in a game, high intensity, having to work hard and fight for every ball and that can only help with the development of you as a player. He wants us to be high energy all over the pitch.”

“I have to admit that I was really gutted when Mark (Bonner) left as I really appreciated everything that he had done for me since bringing me to Gillingham and given me the chances to perform for him.”

“I was gutted because I felt that we all could have done more, as he gave me a lot of chances and believed in me so much; when I spoke to him, I just thanked him for everything.”

After Doncaster, the Gills head to Tranmere and happy memories for Nevitt. “I had a great time there and they really liked me so hopefully it will be good going back but it’s another place where we have to win!”
