Glenn Morris won plaudits last weekend with a terrific double late save to secure Gillingham a point at Salford City and after Tuesday’s late reverse to Cheltenham Town, Gareth Ainsworth’s side will be looking for three points against Grimsby Town when the Mariners come to MEMS Priestfield.

Speaking to KSN this week, we asked Morris about the stunning double stop at Salford, and the Gills keeper told us, “The weekend was good and to back up the clean sheet against Accrington with the one at Salford was a great effort from everyone and was very important for us especially as Salford is always a tough place to go and they are always good at home – it really was a difficult place to go and to come away with a point was great.”
Much has been made of the magnificent late double save from the Gills stopper kept the point but when we asked Morris about the action, he told us, “It’s always nice when something like that happens towards the end of the game and whilst I really enjoyed it, it is my job to keep the ball out of the net and make some saves every now and then which I was able to do there keeping those two out!”
“I try and keep myself pretty level headed and never celebrate saves so whilst you might get the same feelings (making good saves) as a striker scoring a goal, I don’t like to get too over emotional as I want to stay in the game, one hundred percent focused especially when the side is still trying to get over the line…”
“I was actually at the time, thinking that there was going to be a third shot coming in but we cleared it. As a keeper you have to be on your toes for any chance – we had to make sure that the boys were still focused on an important last few minutes and it’s only once the final whistle goes that you can look back and reflect on saves and blocks and if you’ve kept the clean sheet, even better.”
“I have to enjoy every moment of my career now – I am certainly not going to take anything for granted and really enjoy things, especially those clean sheets away from home!”
Morris and the Gills return home on Saturday to face a Grimsby Town team who won a very controversial return earlier in the season, when the home side won by a hugely contentious penalty against the nine-men of Gillingham after Remeao Hutton had been sent off in the first half and Jonny Williams followed at the award of the penalty.
“It was a very “interesting” afternoon,” Morris recalled. “It was a strange game for many reasons – all in it was a one nil defeat, but it almost felt like a moral victory for us at that point of the season and after what happened that day!”
“We know that Saturday will be a very different and very difficult game as they are a good team and on a good run towards the Play Offs so I’m sure that we will have to be at our best to get anything out of the game.”
“Andy Cook up front is always a handful, so I know that potentially we will be in for another busy afternoon. It’s a shame that we are not involved in the battle for post season, but we’re back at home to hopefully get another win in front of our fans – to get the feel-good factor back in will be great for everyone!”
