Keeper Glenn Morris faced the media at Priestfield this week and looked ahead to the weekend’s home game with Tranmere Rovers at MEMS Priestfield as Gillingham look to get back to winning ways.

After Saturday’s defeat to leaders Bromley, an improved performance at second placed Notts County in midweek saw Morris and his team-mates edged out by the only goal, and he admitted, “We were all disappointed to come away from Meadow Lane on Tuesday with nothing.”
“We restricted them to very few chances – they are second in the League, and it showed with their standard and beliefs. We are slightly disappointed that we are not closer to them in the League and their points tally; we missed a few chances at the end and it just wasn’t our night – sometimes you just have to accept that, but the performance in itself was a decent one.”
“Their keeper made some big saves at the end and sometimes you have to give goalkeepers credit.” Morris said ruefully smiling.
“It would have been nice to get a point as it did feel as though we deserved something but you don’t always get what you deserve in football, so we now have to dust ourselves down and prepare for this weekend to go and get the three points.”
“We want to get a win first and foremost which is the most important thing and to put on a performance as well would be great.”
“Bromley here last Saturday wasn’t great for the first forty-five minutes – it wasn’t “us” and we got well and truly punished. They are top of the League for a reason – it wasn’t good enough from us though, and that’s football!”
“We have lost to the sides first and second in the League this week and it’s not great in terms of where we are and how many points we are away from where we want to be – we have to put that right starting Saturday!”
“We know how disappointed the fans have been this week but having said that it is football – we all want to turn the corner and start moving a little bit further up the League but first we have to focus and concentrate on beating Tranmere and the keep moving up the table.”
Morris now in his twenty sixth year as a professional was then asked about the continued changing role that keepers have in the modern game – thoughtfully the Gills stopper told us, “Managers are much more demanding now on keepers than when I first started as now-a-days, unlike when I first came in and started when it was “just” catching and kicking, football has adapted and evolved and you just have to go with it if you want to keep playing.”
“Manuel Neuer (the former German international keeper) was one of the first “sweeper-keepers” and he was the best in the world at it. But all keepers know that they don’t give up their goal too much, but I do like it when we play a high line, so you always have to be always on your toes and ready to go!”
“I am pleased to be back in the team – we got two back-to-back wins to start with but we all now just know it would be nice to get back on that winning run starting Saturday!”
“Any game is difficult in this League and the form table does go out of the window so we can’t look at the run that Tranmere are on paper – we know that we can’t take it easy that’s for sure, it will be a tough game for sure but if we perform as we can do… we have shown in the last four games that one half of football has been pretty poor (in each game), we know what we have to do and perform on Saturday.”
