Morris expecting tough test

With Glenn Morris breaking records every time he steps into Gillingham’s goal, the keeper will be a big part of seeing if the 2025 Gills can break a record this weekend that has stood since the mid 1970’s.

Back in 1974, Gillingham were on the way to winning the “old” Fourth Division Championship and went twenty League games unbeaten.

Fast forward to 2025 and if this Gills squad return from Rodney Parade, home of Newport County with a point or more, Ainsworth’s charges will be unbeaten in their last twenty-one League matches.

Keeper Morris, who extends his own record as the Club’s oldest ever Football League player every time he pulls on his keeper’s jersey, has played a massive part in the run and spoke to KSN at this week’s briefing about the unbeaten run.

“We are all really proud to have gone twenty unbeaten – it’s a part of the Club’s history and we have equalled it. If we can get over the line and break the record, it’s down there forever and you won’t be able to take it away from the boys and the group and everyone involved.”

“But we have a tough game to get over the line and we won’t be thinking about it during the game – it won’t come into our heads as we just want to get across the line and get the points!”

“We don’t look ahead too far, and we know that we have a tough game coming up this weekend,” the Gills keeper admitted. “If we carry on putting in the effort that we have been putting in then hopefully we will be alright.”

“Newport will be tough – it always is! It’s quite an intimidating place to go to – the crowd does normally help with that. We have struggled there of late so we know it will be tough.”

“I think they like to play nice football so it will be a different sort of game to some times that we have had recently, but hopefully if we stay on the front foot, we will be alright.”

“Our fans are great,” Morris went on with the news that over five hundred will be making the trip to South Wales.

“They always travel in numbers, and it does really help! It’s incredible – it’s a lot of fans to take a long, long way away from home and we really appreciate it and hopefully we can give them something to cheer about!”

“There are a lot of tough game in League Two, but I think that at Newport, the fans are close to you and sometimes that can play a part on one side of the pitch especially.”

“It’s a long way from home for us and we haven’t had a good lot of results there – I don’t know why but we will be looking to try and change that on Saturday.”

“You can’t always put a finger on it, but it is always a tough place.” Morris was referring to the fact that the Welshmen have won the last six games between the two Clubs and the Gills must go back to the mid 1980s since the last time they won in Newport and that was at County’s previous home at Somerton Park.
