Morris expecting tough final test
Morris expecting tough final test

“It could have been worse but could have been so much better!” The honest opinion of Gillingham keeper Glenn Morris as The Gills head to Port Vale for their final game of the season with their promoted hosts looking for the League Two title.

The 41-year-old was named as both Player’s Player and Supporters Player of the Year at the end of season awards night last weekend and told this week’s briefing.

“I have to be proud to receive the awards and it’s great to get them, but full focus must be on Saturday as we still have one game left and want to try and spoil their party as they look to win the League.”

“We will go there to try and spoil it, but I am really pleased to be the Club’s Player of the Year!”

“Going through the season, it’s been a strange journey,” said Morris, who could make start number thirty-five of the season at Vale Park.

On the opening day of the season, Mark Bonner preferred Jake Turner to Morris, but injury saw Morris’s introduction and he was between the sticks for the Carabao Cup game at Swansea three days later and across Bonner, John Coleman and now Gareth Ainsworth, Morris has been the undoubted number one!

“The season’s had its ups and downs, and to come out that with honours is always very nice!”

“I do have to admit that my highlight was probably that Tuesday night in Swansea as it was the night that I broke Andy Hessenthaler’s record for being the Club’s oldest player!”

“That was a special evening – the game was a difficult one against a quality side in Swansea – that was really up there for me personally!”

Turning his attention to the weekend’s trip to Burslem, Morris said, “We don’t want to go there and roll over and make it easy for them, we want to go there and like I said previously, spoil the party a little bit!”

“They have had a great season – fantastic from them – but we won’t be going there and letting them win the League! The other thing if we keep the unbeaten run going, it will keep going over the summer and come into pre-season and it would great to have it going into that.”

“Sometimes you can keep those runs going into a new season and if we can do that… It just gives everyone confidence and you come back in and know what you can do if you apply yourselves correctly where you can go, so I think it’s a massive boost.”

“The last thing any of us really want is to let it go on the last day of the season!”

“All football seasons have ups and downs for a team, but individually you can have the same ups and downs, it’s never easy and sometimes you have to stay with it and be positive all the way through – both individually and collectively!”

“Obviously we would have liked to have been in a higher position than we are as a team, but it’s where we are – it could have been worse, it could have been a lot better, that’s how you have to look at it and all we can focus on now is the future.”

And we asked Morris if that future, for him, was at Priestfield. “I would still like to be here,” the Gills keeper admitted!

“Obviously we will have to see what comes along. I’m just focused now on getting the season finished and I am sure the conversations will then come along, and we will try and sort something out. At the moment my focus is just on Port Vale and trying to win that game…”
