Morris agrees new Gills deal

Goalkeeper Glenn Morris has signed a new deal with Gillingham keeping him at Priestfield for at least another season.

The 41 year old has put pen to paper on a new deal after an excellent season for the club that saw the shot stopper named as the club’s Player of the Year.

Morris was seen as potentially on his way out of the club at the start of this last campaign and was understudy to Jake Turner under then manager Mark Bonner, but when given his chance, reasserted his position as the club’s number one goalkeeper.

With Taite Holtam having made a couple of appearances towards the end of the season, manager Gareth Ainsworth appears to have already got his goalkeeping department wrapped up ahead of the new campaign beginning in August.

Morris’ clean sheet at Port Vale on Saturday was clearly enough to persuade Ainsworth that despite being the wrong side of forty, the keeper warranted another deal with the club.

Expected to start the new campaign as the club’s number one choice, Morris has proven that age really is just a number and has been up there as one of the best goalkeepers in League Two this past season.

On extending his deal, Glenn said: “I am really pleased, it is nice to get it done early so you can sort of relax over the summer and enjoy the time away.

“Next season will be tough, it always is, but it is about being consistent.”

Manager Gareth Ainsworth said: “I am really pleased that Glenn has agreed to sign for another year.

“He thoroughly deserved to win Player of the Year following some magnificent displays in goal and is a very popular member of the squad.

“He is the model professional who gives everything on a day-to-day basis; his experience is invaluable and we are very lucky to have him.”

Earlier in the season he became the oldest player to ever represent the club, breaking Andy Hessenthaler’s record. Morris has played 38 times this season, keeping 13 clean sheets.
