Moncur a no go for Addicks?
Moncur a no go for Addicks?

Many people thought that Alex Revell would be on Russell Slade’s wanted list, as the pair had worked together at Orient.

Closer examination suggests Slade prefers more mobile strikers now. Kevin Lisbie and David Mooney were his front pair in latter days at Brisbane Road.

Tom Lawrence and Federico Macheda were featured regularly at Cardiff, while the less mobile Kenwyn Jones was loaned out.

Lee Novak has had talks at Charlton but has a number of other suitors. The South London Press has spoken to the player and he indicated he would make a decision on his future later this week.

Slade likes to have a creative winger in his team. Anthony Pilkington fulfilled the role with the Bluebirds.

Local radio here in Northamptonshire has reported that the Cobblers have rejected a bid for Ricky Holmes. They later added that the bid was from Charlton. Holmes has subsequently handed in a transfer request.

Holmes’ boss at Northampton – Chris Wilder – will probably have him on his wanted list, but Essex born Holmes may prefer a move to a southern based club, rather than a switch to Sheffield.

Holmes is 28-years-old, and has scored 14 league goals in 41 starts plus 8 substitute appearances during his 18 month stint at Sixfields.

Slade has discussed recruitment with chief scout, Steve Head, and has deleted some names from the Addicks’original wanted list.

Former Huddersfield midfielder, Duane Holmes, could be one of them, while the situation with George Moncur is more complex.

Slade may not be prepared to match Colchester’s valuation of the goal scoring midfielder.

The former Orient and Cardiff manager has normally had to work with a limited budget, and will not pay over the odds for a player.

Talented though Moncur undoubtedly is, Slade may consider £500,000 too high a price to pay. Barnsley and Peterborough are reported to have agreed to pay Colchester’s asking price as well as add-ons, thought to amount to £250,000.

The supplementary fees would be less of a concern, they would be heavily linked to gaining promotion.

Slade may have a surprise or two up his sleeve. He mentioned at his press conference last week that he had spoken to a Premier League manager, plus two from the Championship.

Birmingham’s Gary Rowett  may have been one, with Novak the likely topic of conversation. But who was the Premier League manager, and who was Slade enquiring about?
