Interim manager Keith Millen insists he is proud of his Gillingham side despite losing 2-1 at home to Notts County on Saturday.

In front of an almost 7,000 strong crowd at Priestfield, it was the visitors that took all three points in their 5000th game in the Football League.

Having suffered another defeat that sees The Gills drop to ninth place in League Two, Millen insists it was a close game that could have gone either way:

“It was a game decided by small margins,” he said. “I thought the players worked their socks off against a very good team. I told them in the dressing room that I’m really proud.”

“It’s raw because I think we deserved a draw, but our effort and commitmentwere excellent. You can see the disappointment in the dressing room.”

“When it got back to 1-1, I thought there was only one team who would go on to win it.”

Scott Malone’s equaliser in the 52nd minute proved to be a mere consolation in the end with Millen believing his charges deserved something from the game:

“Even in the first half, when they were having a lot of the ball, we had opportunities on the break but we weren’t clinical enough.”

“Their first goal came from a three on two for us but we didn’t capitalise on it. We had so many good opportunities but we didn’t punish them.”

Millen is expected to once again take charge of the side for Tuesday night’s trip to Swindon Town.

With owner Brad Galinson due to fly back into the country today, he will have the task of shortlisting the over 20 candidates that have applied for the vacant manager’s position.

Former boss Neil Harris came out at the weekend suggesting that it was a board decision led by former Chairman Paul Scally that saw him sacked.

A couple of weeks on and we are no clearer as to who will replace Harris and Gillingham’s season begins to drift.

An FA charge could also be coming the way of The Gills after Notts County keeper Sam Slocombe was seemingly hit on the head by a vape thrown from the Rainham End on Saturday.

A fine and maybe even a points deduction could see The Gills hit hard with The FA keen to crack down on such behaviour.
