Bromley winger Adam Mekki has described his side’s FA Trophy loss as “gut-wrenching”.

The winger set up the Ravens’ only goal of the game in the 19th minute for Omar Bugeil, but the Northamptonshire side equalised in the final minute of injury time before winning on penalties.

“We started well and created chances but once we scored the openner we sat back and invited pressure,” said Mekki.

“To be fair to Brackley, they kept going to get the goal and then take the game to penalties.

“It’s a gut-wrenching feeling to be that close.”

Neil Smith’s side kicked off at Wembley on Sunday as favourites, but the National League North side were able to come from behind to win 5-4 on penalties.

Successful spot kicks from Frankie Sutherland, Frankie Raymond, Josh Rees and substitute Brandon Hanlan were unable to give Bromley an advantage as Brackley lifted the second of Non-League Finals Day’s two trophies.

“Holding a bottle of champagne is good but I’d rather have a winners medal,” said Mekki, who won man of the match.

“It’s not a nice feeling but we’ve got to move on. It’s been a long season and now we need to look ahead to next year.”
