VCD Athletic return to Oakwood this weekend to entertain Hythe Town is a game that could have huge consequences at in the BOSTIK South East Play Off chase.

Boss Keith McMahon spoke to KSN after his side’s midweek 2-1 win over Sittingbourne at Woodstock Park.  He said, “I said after three away games – Three Bridges, Cray and Sittingbourne – that if we could get six points that we’d take them and that’s what we’ve got despite the poor attitude that I thought we showed on Tuesday at Sittingbourne – I thought they turned up and saw what the first twenty minutes were like and thought we’ll win comfortably!  Fair credit to Sittingbourne – they didn’t stop on a difficult pitch – but all I can say is that we showed some character towards the end, but by then we had the chances to kill the game dead, but we didn’t taken them.

“Our decision making and attitudes were poor, and it takes me bringing on a seventeen-year-old for his debut to score the winning goal for us within thirty seconds.  That was one of very few pluses we can take into Saturday’s game with Hythe – I though we carried one or two players; I know they say its good when you win “ugly” but when the attitudes of the players were like they were tonight, I don’t like it.”

“We’re punching above our weight in this League – apart from Charlie (MacDonald) we’ve got a lot of youngsters here and Tuesday’s win puts us a point outside of the Play Offs again.  If we can get a result against Hythe at the weekend at our place, we’re going to be in an excellent position with fourteen or fifteen games to go.  It gives something to play for and I’ve said before that this is the most exciting year I have managed for a long time – and that includes all of the time at Thamesmead – we’ve got a great bunch who can play some great stuff and that’s why perhaps I wasn’t best pleased with the performance at Sittingbourne as I know what we can do.”

“We had bodies missing on Tuesday and I know that Sam (Denly, the Hythe boss) was at the game but we only had thirteen and Sam will probably hope that it will be the same on Saturday but we’re a different cattle of fish at home on our decent surface and so I’m hoping that Hythe will come in thinking they’ll have the points for the taking.

“We’ll be looking for revenge as we went there without Charlie and we would have got something, if we’d have taken our chances.  I’m hoping that we’ll have a couple of players back for the weekend and one new face too as we need that because we are thin on numbers – that said it’s a big game and we’re at home and I really am looking forward for a win!”
