McKimm hoping for Cray kick start
McKimm hoping for Cray kick start

Cray Valley PM host Dartford this weekend and boss Steve McKimm will be hoping their midweek win at Dulwich Hamlet finally kick starts the Millers season.

After going in front in the first minute through Liam Moore, the home side were quickly level but two goals in three minutes before the half hour from Tom Beere and Ola Ogunwamide gave McKimm’s side a three-one lead that they didn’t give up for their first win in nine League games.

“It was a much-needed result for everybody,” McKimm told KSN when we caught up with him this week.

“We can now try and back it up with another result on Saturday.”

“In that winless run we drew half of the eight games we played so in terms of points to games the return has been woeful! And that’s me being honest!”

“Tuesday night we got a good result because we do exactly what we want them to do as the players did exactly what we asked of them! I am not saying that they haven’t done it in the past – we haven’t had the rub of the green that we may have had in other games, but Tuesday it went for us, and we capitalised and were ruthless and, in my opinion, deserved the win!”

“We don’t have a plus goal difference, but we haven’t conceded loads, but we have let in more than I would have liked. So, in terms of where we are at, we deserve to be where we are because of where we are this season,” McKimm admitted with his side one place above the early relegation line in eighteenth place.

“Looking forward we want to try and better that and catch the team immediately above us (Cheshunt) and then the side above them (St. Albans City) and so on.”

“We are going team by team, we are not looking at how many points away we are, we are looking at just the next team we can catch to make sure that we will not be in the bottom four come the end of the season.”

“We are getting players back from injury now – Tom (Beere) came back and scored at Dulwich; he makes us a different team. Players are coming back and then we will be at full quota, and it will be a fight for positions then.”

“I know that I am going to upset people because they are not starting, you’ll upset those not in the squad but that’s the way that football works.”

“I don’t hold people’s arms behind their back to make them stay – if they aren’t happy then they can go. It’s not what we want – we want a competitive squad, but people have to understand that you can only play eleven players and only have five subs.”

“Dartford are firing at the minute,” the Valley boss said looking at the weekend ahead.

“Ady’s (Pennock) side were where we are but after four or five wins on the bounce are in the Play Offs. I am sure they will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season and Saturday will be an extremely tough game for us,”

“But then every game in this League is tough; there isn’t one game you play that isn’t tough and we have a fight on our hands to keep climbing this League and keep ourselves out of trouble and that’s what we have to do first of all!”
